In what's set to be a musical showdown of epic proportions, Buskers By The Creek festival names 10 of Australia's finest troubadours as finalists in the 2017 'Battle Of The Buskers' competition, which takes place at Currumbin Creek Tavern Friday, 13 October.

Preceding the massive, multi award-winning Buskers By The Creek event (14 & 15 October), Battle of the Buskers sees Australia’s top emerging talent play-off for the coveted Buskers crown and a slew of prizes worth over $10,000, including a paid spot on the Airlie Beach Festival lineup, automatic entry to Bluesfest Busking comp, recording, publicity and advertising packages.

Competition will be fierce this year with Melbourne Youtube sensation Joel James, SXSW showcase sweethearts, The Heart Collectors and Gold Coast's own ethereal harpist ELSKA among the finalists announced today.

"Selecting finalists this year was seriously tough. So much talent on the lineup caused 'lively' discussion amongst committee members!" said Festival Director, Cindy Jensen.

"Ultimately we are stoked with the 10 finalists. All are worthy and will indeed make for one hell of an entertaining battle on the 13th, so you should all definitely come cheer them on!"

"We've decided to offer the final, 11th spot to the 'Fan Finalist,' which will see the artist with the most fan votes on our event page battle it out for the Buskers crown."

Judges include representatives from Airlie Beach Festival of Music, Rabbit Radio, LoveStreet Studios and Blank GC with a special surprise guest on the panel as well.

“The talent being discovered at Buskers by the Creek is phenomenal and we’re stoked to be onboard as a talent sponsor to provide further festival performance opportunities for artists," said Airlie Beach Festival director, Gavin Butlin.

Winners are indeed grinners. And with the prizes up for grabs in this comp, cheeks’ll be cramping as the winner not only takes out an all expenses paid performance slot at Airlie Beach Festival of Music, they also score some $10,000 worth of prizes, including:

  • Up to five VIP tickets to Airlie Beach Festival of Music

Joel James  is a Melbourne boy full of nothing but flair, drive and passion when it comes to his music. Easily recognised by his short size and Pom Pom Beanie, what started as a small Busking career has now grown into rotation on both the Hit Network and Gold Coasts 102.9 Hot Tomato. The Indie/Alternative artist started writing his debut EP “I’m a Fool” whilst busking the Melbourne streets. Although he still loves to perform on those foot paths, his career quickly progressed after launching his EP to a full room at Fitzroy’s ‘Workers Club’, proving to be nothing short of electrifying. The one man band danced around the stage playing his Guitars, a Bass, his Uke, Piano, synths and a 3 piece drum kit all in unison with his loop pedal. Key moments where Joel jumped into the crowd to shred his Guitar, performed tight Drum solo’s and a badass leap over his kit left the crowd buzzing.

From a small village in Snowdonia on the dramatic North Wales coast,  Daryl James  has been playing guitar and drums as far back as he can remember. Having toured UK and Europe with many top bands, in 2012 he hit the road with just a ruc-sac and guitar, to pursue an exciting new solo career. Drawing on a vast wealth of musical experience, he began developing his own music. After travelling around Asia and making his now highly acclaimed debut EP 'Here, There and Everywhere' entirely on the road, he ended up in Australia where he began performing in the streets as a busker. Fusing gritty rock-blues with raw acoustic roots, and an undeniably funky undercurrent of ska and hip-hop, Daryl's music is captivating, soulful and down to earth.
